Closing Time of The Stock Market

The closing time of the stock market is 4:00 p.m. EST on regular trading days.

Normal Stock Market Close

The closing time for the U.S. stock market is 4:00 p.m. EST, this time reflects normal trading hours of the two main U.S. exchanges during regular trading days. The two main U.S. stock exchanges are The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq. Their opening time is 9:30 a.m. EST, however, some trading does occur outside of normal trading hours which is either called “pre-market” or “after-hours” depending on the time at which it occurs. Generally, after-hours extends from closing time until 8:00 p.m. EST while pre-market begins at 4 a.m. EST. Normally, volume is extremely low during this time making it a non-ideal time for most.

What are regular trading days?

Generally, regular trading days are Monday – Friday, no trading occurs on Saturday or Sunday. The exchanges do observe some holidays by adjusting trading hours to close early or entirely on those respective days. Examples of these holidays are Christmas Day, Good Friday, and Thanksgiving, however, a complete list and calendar of their days can be found here.

Exchange Trading Hours Outside the United States

Toronto Stock Exchange Hours – Canada

Continuous regular trading occurs on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) from 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. EST Monday – Friday. Pre-market trading begins at 7 a.m. and continues until regular open at 9:30 a.m. Post-market trading occurs until 5:00 p.m. EST.

Tokyo Stock Exchange Hours – Japan

Regular trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) occurs in two sessions a day, once from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. local time and then again from 12:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. local time.

Trading on the TSE occurs at night for those in EST.

To convert Tokyo local time to EST 13 hours must be subtracted. Meaning trading occurs on the TSE between 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. EST of the previous day and then 11:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. of the same day.

Hong Kong Stock Exchange Hours – Hong Kong

Regular continuous trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) occurs in two sessions a day, once from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. local time and then again from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. local time.

Trading on the HKEX occurs at night for those in EST.

To convert Hong Kong local time to EST 12 hours must be subtracted. Meaning trading occurs on the HKEX between 9:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. EST of the previous day and then 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. of the same day.

Shanghai Stock Exchange Hours – China

Regular continuous trading on the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) occurs in two sessions a day, once from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. local time and then again from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. local time.

Trading on the SSE occurs at night for those in EST.

To convert Shanghai local time to EST 12 hours must be subtracted. Meaning trading occurs on the SSE between 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. EST of the previous day and then 1:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. of the same day.

Euronext – Amsterdam, Paris, Lisbon, Brussels

Euronext serves multiple cities across Europe with continuous trading beginning at 9:00 a.m. local time and ending at 5:30 p.m. unless in Amsterdam then close is at 5:40 p.m.

Trading on Euronext occurs during the morning for those in EST.

To convert Amsterdam and Paris local time to EST 6 hours must be subtracted. Meaning trading occurs on Euronext Amsterdam and Paris between 3:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. EST of the same day.

To convert Lisbon and Brussels local time to EST 5 hours must be subtracted. Meaning trading occurs on Euronext Lisbon and Brussels between 4:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST of the same day.

London Stock Exchange – United Kingdom

Regular continuous trading on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) 8:00 a.m. local time and ending at 4:30 p.m.

Trading on the LSE occurs during the morning for those in EST.

To convert London local time to EST 5 hours must be subtracted. Meaning trading occurs on Euronext Lisbon and Brussels between 3:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. EST of the same day.
